3rd Class Certification

To qualify for your third class certification you must pass the third class examinations (all four papers) and have met one of the requirements below:

(a)   At least 12 months as chief engineer operating a high pressure boiler or high pressure boiler plant with a capacity greater than 500 kilowatts;

(b)   At least 12 months as shift engineer operating a high pressure boiler or high pressure boiler plant with a capacity greater than 1000 kilowatts;

(c)    At least 12 months assisting in the operation of a high pressure boiler or high pressure boiler plant with a capacity greater than 5000 kilowatts;

(d)   At least 24 months as chief engineer or shift engineer operating a low pressure boiler or low pressure boiler plant with a capacity greater than 3000 kilowatts, with the capacity of the plant calculated as the aggregate capacity of all boilers installed in the plant;

(e)   At least ½ of the period mentioned in (a) (b) (c) or (d) has operated in the role described and for at least 12 months, has performed in a role acceptable to the chief inspector on the design, construction, installation, repair, maintenance or operation of pressure equipment;

(f)     At least 12 month as process operator involving steam equipment in a role acceptable to the chief inspector and has completed an approved course in power engineering leading toward a third class power engineer’s certificate; or

(g)    At least 6 months experience in the operation of a high pressure boiler or high pressure boiler plant with a capacity greater than 1000 kilowatts and is a graduate engineer.

Six months’ credit will be granted toward the fulfilment of the operating experience requirements set out in above (a) (b) (c) or (d) for the successful completion of an approved course in power engineering leading toward a third class power engineer’s certificate.

Operating Experience

Upon successful completion of all four third class exam papers and the required verified operating experience, as well as submission of course completion if required, your certificate will be mailed to you within 15 business days.  Please be sure TSASK has your most current mailing address on record.
