NH3 Safety Bulletin
This bulletin is intended for all NH3 fertilizer dispensing establishments.
On April 30, 2013 a sizable release of NH3 occurred as a result of a safety valve braking off on a 90 ton NH3 dispensing tank. The break occurred on the threaded part attaching the safety valve to the dispensing tank. The suspected cause is the wind load on the discharge piping attached to the top of the safety valve. In severe wind load conditions, the discharge piping should break before the safety valve is broken off.
It is recommended that all discharge piping attached to the safety valve be equipped with an appropriate break away connection allowing the discharge piping to disconnect from the safety valve during high wind load conditions.
To prevent the possibility of a similar incident and NH3 release do verify that the safety valve discharge piping at your distribution plant is equipped with a break away connection at the safety valve outlet or that adequate pipe support is in place.
