Power Engineer Information

 

The information provided below applies to Refrigeration Engineers and 5th Class through 1st Class certifications. Information on Refrigeration Plant Operators is available under Limited Power Engineer Information on the left side menu.

 

Please Note: In addtion to obtaining your Power Engineer certficate, you must also hold a valid licence to work as an operator of that class in Saskatchewan. Licences are valid for five years.

 

Exam Sittings & Dates

You must submit an application form, payment and any necessary proof of qualification 21 days in advance of the exam date. Note that all exam fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Regular Exam Sittings

TSASK holds four day long power engineer exam sittings in Regina and Saskatoon, four times per year. In 2012 there will also be an additional full day exam sitting offered in the Spring and Fall in both cities. Available dates are listed in the online exam calendar in yellow. Additional Exam Dates

Additional exam dates may become available throughout the year. These additional dates will be listed in the online exam calendar in yellow.

Please note that these exams are not held in the same locations as the regular TSASK sittings. And unlike the regular TSASK sittings they may be held outside of Regina or Saskatoon, may start at different times and may have a limited number of seats available. This information will be available by clicking on the sitting's title in the online calendar or by contacting our Regina office.

 

Qualifying to Write an Exam

The requirements to qualify for an examination are outlined in the applicable jurisdictional Act and Regulations. Note that operating experience is normally required. In cases where experience time is insufficient or inadequate, completion of an approved study course may be allowed as a substitution, however, a study course is strongly recommended in any event.

Information on power engineering examinations can be found in the Regulations in Part V,  Division 1 starting at section 90. 5th Class through 1st Class

To ensure that you have the most up to date syllabus please download a copy from the SOPEEC website at www.sopeec.org.

The Syllabus is intended to assist candidates studying for the examination. This Syllabus has been approved by the Standardization of Power Engineers’ Examinations Committee (SOPEEC) and the Association of Chief Inspectors (ACI)

It is strongly recommended that, before undertaking the examination, the candidate completes an appropriate study course and is familiar with operation of boilers in general. These courses are offered by various educational institutions in Canada.

In addition to the foregoing course, it is recommended that the candidate obtain and become familiar with the pertinent publications listed in the “Reference Material for Power Engineering Students and Examination Candidates”, which is obtainable from the various institutes or from the SOPEEC web site.
