Power Engineers

The Technical safety Authority of Saskatchewan (TSASK) is responsible for the examination, certification and licensing of all Power Engineers and Boiler Operators in the province of Saskatchewan.

In addition to offering SOPEEC exams, TSASK ensures that all requirements as per the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Regulations are met in order for an individual to obtain proper certification and licensing to safely operate as a Power Engineer or Boiler Operator.

PE Scope of Authority

Fireman Boiler Operator

Can Operate as: 

  • Chief Engineer of High Pressure Steam up to 300 kW;
  • A Shift Engineer of High Pressure Steam up to 500 kW;
  • Chief Engineer of Low Pressure Steam up to 1,000 kW;
  • Shift Engineer of Low Pressure Steam of Any Capacity.

Oilfield A Boiler Operator

Can operate a high pressure boiler or boiler plant not more than 500 kW that is used in an oilfield location.

Oilfield B Boiler Operator

Can operate a high pressure boiler or boiler plant not more than 1,000 kW that is used in an oilfield location.

Refrigeration Plant Operator

Can operate a refrigeration plant with a capacity not more than 100 tonnes.

1st Class Power Engineer

Can operate a boiler, boiler plant, oilfield once through boiler plant or refrigeration plant of any capacity.

2nd Class Power Engineer

Can Operate as:

  • Chief Engineer of High Pressure Steam up to 10,000 kW;
  • Shift Engineer of High Pressure Steam any capacity;
  • Chief/Shift Engineer of Low Pressure Steam any capacity;
  • Chief/Shift Engineer of Refrigeration Plant any capacity;
  • Chief Engineer of an oilfield once-through boiler or boiler plant with a capacity of not more than 15,000 kW;
  • Shift Engineer of an oilfield once-through boiler or boiler plant of any capacity.

3rd Class Power Engineer

Can Operate as:

  • Chief Engineer of High Pressure Steam up to 5,000 kW;
  • Shift Engineer of High Pressure Steam up to 10,000 kW;
  • Chief/Shift Engineer of Low Pressure Steam any capacity;
  • Chief Engineer of an oilfield once-through boiler or boiler plant with a capacity of not more than 10,000 kW;
  • Shift Engineer of an oilfield once-through boiler or boiler plant with a capacity of not more than 15,000 kW;
  • To operate a Refrigeration Plant of any capacity.

4th Class Power Engineer

Can Operate as:

  • Chief Engineer of High Pressure Steam up to 1,000 kW
  • Shift Engineer of High Pressure Steam up to 5,000 kW
  • Chief/Shift Engineer of Low Pressure Steam any capacity
  • Chief Engineer of an oilfield once-through boiler or boiler plant with a capacity of not more than 5,000 kW
  • Shift Engineer of an oilfield once-through boiler or boiler plant with a capacity of not more than 10,000 kW
  • To operate a Refrigeration Plant up to 500 tonnes

5th Class Power Engineer

Can Operate as:

  • Chief Engineer of High Pressure Steam up to 500 kW;
  • Shift Engineer of High Pressure Steam up to 1,000 kW;
  • Chief/Shift Engineer of Low Pressure Steam any capacity;
  • Chief Engineer of an oilfield once-through boiler or boiler plant with a capacity of not more than 500 kW;
  • Shift Engineer of an oilfield once-through boiler or boiler plant with a capacity of not more than 2,000 kW;
  • To operate a Refrigeration Plant up to 200 tonnes.

Refrigeration Engineer

Can operate a refrigeration plant of any capacity.
