Overview
There are several reasons why an owner may choose to perform electrical work in their residence.  If you are an owner, you maybe wondering why you need an electrical permit.
Some examples of when an electrical home/farm owner permit is required include projects such as:
- Replacing or updating light switches and electrical outlets.
- Garages.
- Installing a ceiling fan.
- Connecting permanently installed appliances such as dishwashers, ranges, or furnaces.
- Wiring of hot tubs and swimming pools (this requires the owner or their immediate family member to be a licensed Electrical Journeyperson).
This application is restricted to a single phase non-hazardous electrical installation not exceeding 200 amps or 300 volts between phase conductors. Electrical work exceeding 200 amps or 300 volts, polyphase, hazardous locations, renewable energy systems, EV chargers, battery storage installations or generators must be performed by a Licensed Saskatchewan Electrical Contractor.
Benefits of Purchasing a Home/Farm Owner Permit
Investing in a permit is a wise decision. It provides numerous benefits that most owners are not aware of.
- Provides assurance that the work being performed adheres to established guidelines and regulations for the safe installation of electrical systems.
- Reduces the risk of electrical fires or other damage that could arise due to non-permitted, defective work.
- Gives the owner peace of mind knowing that their home and their loved ones are protected.
- Adds a level of assurance to potential buyers that you have taken the necessary steps to ensure the legality and the compliance of any electrical work that has been performed.
