Gas Inspections Notice – Prohibited installation or use of certain gas fireplaces, Canadian Fire Hearth Mfg. Inc. or Luxor Mfg. Inc.

Luxor and Canadian Hearth Fireplaces having no certification, or unauthorized certification

This notice is being issued for safety purposes as it relates to requirements under the Gas Inspection Act that all gas equipment must be certified for use by an accredited agency and bear evidence of its certification or otherwise be approved by Gas Inspections.

Certain models and serial numbers of fireplaces manufactured by Canadian Fire Hearth Mfg. Inc. or Luxor Mfg. Inc. either do not bear evidence of certification for use in Canada by an accredited agency or may bear an invalid certification mark that has been used without authorization. Any affected serial number of these affected models of fireplaces is considered uncertified gas equipment and, like all uncertified gas equipment, cannot be sold, connected to a fuel source, or operated in Saskatchewan.

Detailed lists of the subject fireplace models and serial numbers having a valid certification are attached to this notice as Attachments A, B, and C. Any model listed in these attachments having a serial number outside of the valid certifications is uncertified. If it bears a certification mark, the mark is reported to be invalid.

Some of the affected fireplaces may have been installed by a licensed gas contractor under a gas permit, with the permit inspected and cleared by a gas inspector based upon an invalid certification mark placed on the gas equipment. Although TSASK Gas Inspections has no recorded safety incidents involving one of these products, homeowners are asked not to operate uncertified gas fireplaces and report their particulars to geis@tsask.ca.

Attachment A – Lab Test Certification Inc. (Lab Test)

Gas fireplace models bearing either of the above labels and with serial numbers within the range noted in the table below have been certified by Lab Test as meeting ANSI Z21.50/CSA 2.22.

Gas fireplace models bearing either of the above labels and with serial numbers outside of the range than those noted in the table below have a label that has been used without the permission of Lab Test and is considered uncertified and subject to this notice.

Note: Lab Test Certification Inc. (Lab Test) suspended the listing of Canadian Fire Hearth Mfg. Inc. on April 23, 2015. A Lab Test label attached to any gas fireplace manufactured after this date is an invalid mark of certification.

Attachment B – QAI Laboratories Ltd. (QAI)

Gas fireplace models bearing either of the above labels and with serial numbers within the range noted in the table below have been certified by QAI as meeting ANSI Z21.50/CSA 2.22.

Gas fireplace models bearing either of the above labels and with serial numbers outside of the range than those noted in the table below have a label that has been used without the permission of QAI and are considered uncertified and subject to this notice.

Note: QAI Laboratories Ltd. (QAI) suspended the listing of Luxor Mfg. Inc. on November 25, 2016. A QAI label attached to any gas fireplace manufactured after this date is an invalid mark of certification.

Attachment C – OMNI-Test Laboratories Inc. (OTL)

Note: OMNI-Test Laboratories Inc. (OTL) suspended the listing of Canadian Fire Hearth Mfg. Inc. on December 31, 2010. An OTL label attached to any gas fireplace manufactured after this date is an invalid mark of certification.
