Changes to Separation Requirements

Rule 68-058 3) c):

A copper wire ring must now be installed around a hot tub when it is placed directly on the ground (see Figure 1).
Cement pads or blocks are no longer deemed sufficient for separation from the ground.

Non-conductive Separation:

If the addition of a copper ring is not possible and access to the hot tub is from a conductive surface, it is necessary to implement a non-conductive barrier within 1.5 meters of the hot tub. (Refer to Figure 2)
Suitable non-conductive materials include:

– Rubber matting, wood, plastic, wood-plastic composites, fiberglass, fiberglass composites

Note: When replacing a hot tub with one that has the same characteristics on existing concrete pads or slabs, it is not necessary to meet the installation requirements of Rules 68-058 3)c). For your safety, TSASK recommends installing a non-conductive surface for isolation and separation.

Changes to Disconnecting Requirements

Rule 68-072:

A disconnect must be located outside of the dwelling unit.
It must be readily accessible and lockable when not in sight of the pool or spa.
The disconnect must not be within 1.5 meters of the pool or spa unless:

– If installed between 1.5 to 3 meters from the hot tub, it must be GFCI protected, or behind a permanent barrier to the water.
