Overview
Recent field observations have identified an increasing number of gas installations utilizing polypropylene venting systems that have not been installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions. This bulletin is being issued to reinforce the importance of complying with those instructions, as proper installation is critical to the safe operation of these systems.
TSASK Gas & Plumbing Inspections reminds all gas contractors and installers that polypropylene venting systems must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Strict adherence to these instructions is expected and will be verified during inspections.
Prior to starting an installation, installers must review the instructions for the specific venting product being used and familiarize themselves with all applicable installation requirements. These include details such as joint assembly, connection to the appliance, support methods and spacing, slope, termination locations, and clearances.
Installers are encouraged to contact the product distributor to discuss installation requirements and arrange venting product-specific training where available. Such training can help installers become familiar with the product and its installation procedures; however, it does not replace the installer’s responsibility to read, understand, and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
Where an existing polypropylene venting system is found to be leaking flue gases or otherwise not installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions, corrective action must be taken. Depending on the circumstances, this may include repair, replacement, or the issuance of a red tag.
