Overview
On February 1, 2021 Gas & Electrical Inspections transferred from SaskPower to the Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan (TSASK). Since 2010, TSASK has administered boiler, pressure vessel, elevator and amusement ride safety, and since August 2020 has administered Gas and Electrical Licensing, under the goal of providing a single point of contact for permitting, inspections and licensing of safety related services in the province. For more details, please see Gas Permit – Technical Safety Authority Saskatchewan (TSASK)
This necessitated changes to the Gas Inspections Act and Gas Inspections Regulations
The Act was also updated to provide more effective enforcement. Administrative Penalties and Discipline orders can now be assessed against a person for any contravention of the Act or Regulations or for failure to comply with an order pursuant to the act.
The maximum amount for Administrative Penalties increases to $5,000 from $2,500 and can include $1,000 per day penalty for each day the infraction continues.
Discipline Orders can consist of any sanctions the Chief Inspector deems necessary such as but not limited to; specified training, working only under supervision, and to stop or modify any work in progress.
In the Regulations, Saskatchewan has now adopted the 2020 editions of the following gas codes:
- CSA B149.1 Natural gas and propane installation code
- CSA B149.2 Propane storage and handling code
- CSA B149.3 Code for the field approval of fuel-burning appliances and equipment
Copies may be purchased directly from CSA. The Saskatchewan Codes of Practice to these three 2020 gas codes are available at: Gas Codes – Technical Safety Authority Saskatchewan (TSASK)
Presentations of the pertinent changes to the previous 2015 gas codes, which would normally be given in-person, are posted for your review at: Gas Codes – Technical Safety Authority Saskatchewan (TSASK)
To provide the mechanical industry with sufficient lead time to incorporate new code requirements into project plans, Gas Inspections will in enforce these 2020 codes on all gas permits received May 1, 2021 and thereafter. If you have any questions or concerns, please email geis@tsask.ca
